How often should an office be cleaned?

There's no universal answer, but there is a reliable way to figure out what's right for your space.

The honest answer is "it depends" — but it depends on a small number of factors you can actually evaluate for your own space, rather than a rule of thumb that applies to every office.

Start with foot traffic and headcount

More people in a space means more trash, more restroom use, and more wear on floors and high-touch surfaces. A dense open-plan office with 50 people needs a different cadence than a quiet 5-person suite, even at the same square footage.

Factor in your industry

Some environments carry a higher baseline expectation regardless of traffic — see our note on medical office cleaning for how healthcare-adjacent spaces typically need more frequent, disinfection-focused attention than a standard office.

Consider client visibility

If clients or the public regularly visit your space, appearance-sensitive areas like the lobby and conference rooms may need more frequent attention than the rest of the office, even if a lighter overall schedule would otherwise be enough.

A general starting framework

  • Nightly or every other night: higher-traffic offices, client-facing spaces, or anywhere restrooms and trash need daily attention.
  • 2–3 times a week: smaller or lower-traffic offices where daily buildup is minimal.
  • Weekly, with daily internal upkeep: very small offices that handle light daily tasks (trash, wipe-downs) internally and bring in a cleaning service for the deeper weekly work.

These are starting points, not prescriptions — the only way to get it right is to look at your specific space. See our office cleaning checklist for what should happen at each frequency tier.

It's easier to adjust than to guess right the first time

Most facilities find the right frequency by starting with a reasonable estimate and adjusting after a few weeks based on how the space actually looks between visits. A good cleaning partner should be comfortable revisiting frequency with you rather than locking you into the original plan indefinitely.
